FAQs about Parkinson's Disease
What Is Parkinson’s Disease?
Parkinson’s Disease is a progressive neuro-degenerative disorder caused by the loss of dopamine-producing nerve cells in the brain.
This loss of dopamine affects the brain’s ability to control smooth and coordinated movements, leading to motor symptoms such as tremors, stiffness, slowness, and balance problems, as well as non-motor issues like fatigue, depression, and cognitive decline.
Why Does Parkinson’s Happen?
Parkinson’s develops due to a mix of genetic and environmental factors. While some genetic mutations increase risk, long-term exposure to toxins such as pesticides or repeated head trauma may also contribute.
Abnormal protein deposits called alpha-synuclein form Lewy bodies in the brain, leading to nerve cell damage. Age remains the greatest risk factor, as the likelihood of developing Parkinson’s rises significantly after 50.
Where Parkinson’s Affects the Body?
The disease begins in the brain’s substantia nigra, a region that controls movement. As dopamine-producing neurons in this area degenerate, communication between the brain and body weakens, resulting in the hallmark symptoms of Parkinson’s such as tremors, rigidity, and reduced movement control.
Who Is Affected by Parkinson’s Disease?
Parkinson’s affects millions of people worldwide, most commonly adults over 50 years old. Men are statistically more likely to develop the condition than women.
Management of Parkinson’s involves a multidisciplinary team that includes neurologists, physiotherapists, occupational and speech therapists, dietitians, and psychologists, all working together to support both patients and caregivers.
How Rehabilitation Improves Life with Parkinson’s?
Rehabilitation combines physical, occupational, and speech therapy to help patients move, speak, and live more independently.
Techniques such as LSVT BIG exercises, balance and gait training, and adaptive daily routines strengthen mobility and reduce fall risk. With added psychological support and education, patients and caregivers learn to manage symptoms effectively, maintain confidence, and improve overall quality of life.
When Should Rehabilitation Begin?
Rehabilitation should start as early as possible, ideally from the moment Parkinson’s is diagnosed.
Early intervention helps preserve mobility, function, and independence, allowing individuals to maintain a higher quality of life while slowing physical decline over time.
