Warning, Stroke Could Happen to Anyone!

Recognise. Act. Recover.

Stroke is a medical emergency that occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients.

Brain cells begin to die within minutes, making stroke one of the leading causes of death and long-term disability worldwide.

In Malaysia, stroke is the country’s third leading cause of death and one of the top 10 causes of hospitalisation nationwide (Burden of Stroke in Malaysia, PubMed).

Cases are increasingly affecting younger adults, with stroke incidence among those under 65 rising sharply (Stroke Burden in Malaysia, PMC-NIH).

Every Minute Counts

Stroke is a serious, time-critical condition. The faster it is recognised and treated, the better the chances of survival and recovery. Delayed action can lead to permanent brain damage, disability or death.

What You’ll Learn

1. Pre-Stroke Awareness

Know the early signs using FAST:

  • Face drooping on one side
  • Arm weakness or numbness
  • Speech difficulty or slurring
  • Time to call for emergency help immediately

2. Warning Signs

Other warning signs include:

  • Sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body
  • Sudden confusion or trouble understanding
  • Sudden vision problems in one or both eyes
  • Sudden severe headache with no known cause
  • Sudden dizziness, loss of balance or coordination

3. Risk Factors

Common contributors to stroke risk:

  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • Smoking
  • Obesity and physical inactivity
  • Heart conditions (e.g. atrial fibrillation)
  • Family history of stroke
  • Carotid artery narrowing

4. Before, During & After a Stroke: What to Do

  • Before: Manage health risks with regular screenings and a healthy lifestyle.
  • During: Act FAST, seek emergency help, and keep the person safe.
  • After: Start rehabilitation early and continue therapy and support for recovery.

5. Why Early Screening Matters

Carotid artery screening can detect narrowing or blockages in the arteries supplying blood to the brain, one of the key warning indicators before a stroke occurs. Early detection allows for timely intervention and can significantly reduce stroke risk.
