Fibrotouch Scan
A Fibrotouch scan is a non-invasive procedure used to assess liver health, particularly in detecting and monitoring liver fibrosis and steatosis (fatty liver). It uses transient elastography technology to measure the stiffness and fat content of the liver tissue. It is valued for being quick, painless, and repeatable, allowing for regular monitoring of liver health in patients with chronic liver conditions.
Fibrotouch Scan is performed to:
- Screen for fatty liver disease (NAFLD or alcoholic liver disease)
- Quantify liver fat content using UAP (Ultrasound Attenuation Parameter)
- Detect and stage fibrosis ranging from mild stiffness to cirrhosis
- Monitor progression or improvement following lifestyle or medical interventions
- Identify high-risk individuals for complications such as NASH or liver cancer
- Guide treatment plans for metabolic or hepatic disorders
Who Should Undergo a Fibrotouch Scan?
Recommended for individuals who have:
- Obesity, diabetes, or metabolic syndrome
- High cholesterol or triglycerides
- Elevated liver enzymes (ALT, AST)
- History of alcohol intake
- Viral hepatitis (HBV, HCV)
- Known fatty liver requiring follow-up
- Family history of liver disease
When is a Fibrotouch Scan Recommended?
- Estimate degree of existing liver damage
- Monitor disease progression via serial measurements
- To monitor chronic liver conditions
How is the Fibrotouch Scan Performed?
Preparation
- Fasting for2–4 hours may be advised.
- Patient lies on their back with the right arm elevated.
Procedure
- A probe is positioned over the right upper abdomen.
- Painless mechanical pulses generate shear waves through the liver.
- Ultrasound signals measure the speed and attenuation of these waves.
Outputs
- Liver Stiffness Measurement (LSM) in kilopascals (kPa) → indicates fibrosis.
- UAP Score → quantifies liver fat content.
Results are immediate.
Key Advantages
- Quick, painless, and non-invasive
- Detects liver fat and fibrosis early
- Helps prevent progression to NASH or cirrhosis
- Provides clear numbers to track your liver health
- Helps tailor lifestyle or treatment plans
